Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi inaugurated a number of marine terminals at East Port Said Port, located within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, SCZONE including the opening of the Suez Canal Company for Car Trading and the opening of the Sky Ports Multipurpose Logistics Terminal.During the opening ceremony, Sisi emphasized his desire to increase foreign investment in the transport and logistics sector, pledging to provide all relevant facilities.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone SCZONE is a public authority established by Egypt in 2015 by presidential decree as a free zone and global trade hub covering an area of ​​460 square kilometers. Its aim is to attracting global companies to invest in a favorable business environment and facilitate their access to regional markets.

One of the world’s most efficient and competitive container hubs

It is noteworthy that the East Port Said port, (EPS) located at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, is ranked as the best container port in Africa and the third largest globally among the top 100 container ports worldwide. As Egyptian East Port Said (EPS) port has climbed seven places in two years to rank third worldwide and first in the region in the World Bank’s 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), up from 10th place in 2022. The achievement highlights EPS port’s transformation into one of the world’s most efficient and competitive container hubs, according to the Suez Canal Economic Zone ( SCZONE).

Official figures reveal

Official figures reveal a strong governmental interest in developing the transport and logistics sector, as the area of ​​Egyptian ports expanded from 40 million square meters in 2014 to 75 million in 2025, with plans to increase it to 100 million in 2030. Egyptian ports also received 106 billion tons of goods during 10 years after the addition of new berths with a length of 70 kilometers.

Transforming the country into a global logistics hub.

Tarek Fathy, Chairman of the Egyptian Skyports Group, affirmed that the group's projects in Egypt will contribute to transforming the country into a global logistics hub.

Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the General Authority SCZONE for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, explained that between 2016 and 2025, investments totaling $11.6 billion were attracted, focused on localizing industry, including in the field of green hydrogen production, in accordance with Egypt's national low-carbon hydrogen strategy.

Development of 14 ports and the construction of 5 new ones

Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, Kamel El-Wazir, pointed to the development of 14 ports and the construction of 5 new ones as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at making Egypt one of the world's leading hubs for transportation, logistics, and transit trade.

He said the ministry is working on building and upgrading new quays extending over 35 km long and ranging between 15-18 meters deep along the Red Sea coast in Safaga and Ain Sokhna, and the Mediterranean coast in Alexandria, Damietta and Port Said, taking total length of quays at Egyptian seaports to 76 km.

In addition, a total of 6 km-long breakwaters are under construction, the minister said, adding that the ministry is also working for deepening shipping routes to increase port annual handling capacity from 135 million tons to 400 tons.

World Bank indicators

World Bank indicators reflect a significant leap in the level of Egyptian ports, with the Damietta Container Terminal ranking among the top 20 container terminals globally, the Port of Alexandria being ranked among the top 100 container ports worldwide for 2025, and the Port of Ain Sokhna entering the Guinness World Records as the deepest man-made port ever excavated, reaching a depth of 19 meters.
