Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, has signed the decrees appointing the new presidents of eight Port System Authorities, thus completing a fundamental institutional transition for the governance of their respective ports.

The appointments concern

The appointments concern: Francesco Benevolo, president of the Central-Northern Adriatic Sea Port Authority; Giovanni Gugliotti, president of the Ionian Sea Port Authority; Davide Gariglio, president of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority; Raffaele Latrofa, president of the Central-Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority; Eliseo Cuccaro, president of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority; Matteo Gasparato, president of the Northern Adriatic Sea Port Authority; Paolo Piacenza, president of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port Authority; Domenico Bagalà, president of the Sardinian Sea Port Authority.

The appointment of general secretaries

Deputy Minister Edoardo Rixi explained yesterday to the newspaper Il Piccolo that the delay between parliamentary approval and the appointment was due to the political debate surrounding the appointment of general secretaries, with Tito Vespasiani's suggestion in Genoa having shuffled the cards: "The rush to appoint general secretaries in Genoa created some tension, because the idea was to appoint all the presidents first and then the secretaries." However, the friction now seems to have been resolved.

Italian  Ports

It is noteworthy that the evolution of Italy’s port system is increasingly becoming a focal point of strategic dialogue between institutions and industry players. Italian  Ports are a network of commercial and passenger harbors, managed by the Italian Port System Authority, that function as crucial gateways for international trade and as strategic hubs connecting Europe to the Mediterranean and North Africa. With a vast coastline, Italy has over 60 ports, including major ones like Genoa, Livorno, Naples, Trieste, and Venice, that handle millions of tons of cargo and millions of passengers annually.
