Port of Los Angeles ( LA ) Executive Director Gene Seroka joins Richard Quest on CNN Quest Means Business to discuss the rising costs and availability of fuel due to the Iran war.
Gene Seroka is the Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, the busiest container port in North America. Since his appointment was confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council in June 2014, the Port has experienced a series of record-breaking performances. In addition to setting multiple monthly and quarterly cargo records, the Port of Los Angeles has achieved two new milestones during his tenure: It became the first port in the Western Hemisphere to process 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in a 12-month period in June 2021, and it processed 1 million TEUs in a single month for the first time in May 2021.

In his role as Executive Director, Seroka interacts with a wide range of stakeholders, including port customers from around the world, industry partners, elected and appointed officials at all levels, business leaders, community organisations, and local residents. As a respected global trade expert, he has advocated for rules-based trade agreements that benefit American exporters and manufacturers.

Throughout his illustrious career in shipping, global logistics and executive management, Seroka has distinguished himself as a leader. In 2024, he was profiled by the Los Angeles Times as part of its “L.A. Influential” series, which highlights the city’s top leaders. In 2023, he received the highly regarded Stanley T. Olafson Award from the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his work in the world trade industry and his leadership of the nation’s busiest container port. In the same year, the Asian American Architects/Engineering Association honoured him with its President's Award.
Seroka currently serves as Vice President of the International Association of Ports and Harbors for North America and sits on the Boards of Directors of the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. He is also Chairman of the Executive Board of the USC Global Supply Chain Institute, as well as serving on the Business Advisory Council of the Northwestern University Transportation Center.
The Port of Los Angeles is the busiest container seaport in the Western Hemisphere, located in San Pedro Bay, California, about 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. It serves as a premier gateway for international trade—particularly with Asia—and covers 7,500 acres of land and water with 43 miles of waterfront, handling cargo such as electronics, apparel, and furniture.
