Despite having been the French shipping company that had pushed harder in recent months to bring its ships back to transiting the Red Sea and the Suez Canal on the Asia-Europe trade, the French company CMA CGM has taken the market somewhat by surprise by now announcing that three of its liner services will once again be diverted to the Cape of Good Hope. CMA CGM, the world's third-largest container shipping line, did not elaborate on the global uncertainties
Shipping group CMA CGM will re-reroute vessels on three of its services away from the Suez Canal due to global uncertainties, it said on Tuesday, reining in plans to expand transits after two years of disruption linked to attacks on vessels. Shipping companies have been weighing a return to the critical Asia-Europe trade corridor after vessels were rerouted around southern Africa in late 2023 following attacks in the Red Sea by Yemeni Houthi rebels, who claimed they were motivated by the war in Gaza and the plight of Palestinians.

"In light of the complex and uncertain international environment," the Marseille-based global carrier stated in a statement, "the CMA CGM Group is constantly and carefully monitoring all potential impacts on its operations. Consequently," it added, "it has decided, for the time being, to divert the vessels deployed on our FAL 1, FAL 3, and MEX services via the Cape of Good Hope. This decision will be reviewed regularly," the Marseille-based global carrier stated.
Specifically, the French Asia Line 1 (FAL) connects 13 ports between the Far East and Northern Europe on a weekly basis, using 14 ships, all the way to the Baltic Sea, with a stop at the transhipment port of Tangier Med in Morocco. The FAL3 service also serves the Asia-Northern Europe trade with 15 ships and calls at the ports of Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Le Havre. The MEX (Mediterranean Club Express) service calls at 14 ports with 14 ships (weekly), departing from the Far East and sailing up the Red Sea to Jeddah, before entering the Mediterranean and calling at Malta, Fos-sur-Mer, Barcelona, and Valencia.
