The supply vessel Shark was also involved in the rescue operations coordinated by the Coast Guard

The Italian Coast Guard is currently engaged in a complex operation following a fire that broke out on the Rospomare B oil platform, located approximately 10 nautical miles off the coast of Vasto, in the Adriatic Sea, for which no injuries or traces of pollution at sea have been reported according to Shipping Italy

In an official statement, the coastguard described the ongoing response as a “complex operation” aimed at managing the fire and mitigating risks. “There are no reports of injuries or evidence of pollution in the surrounding waters,” the statement emphasized.

The intervention by MRCC  

The intervention, coordinated by the National Maritime Rescue Coordination Center MRCC  of the Coast Guard, saw the immediate intervention of air and naval resources and the collaboration of specialized means to deal with the emergency.

The patrol boat CP878

The patrol boat CP878, from the Termoli Coast Guard, arrived on site, with Fire Brigade personnel on board to support the fire-fighting operations, and the patrol boat CP538 from the Vasto Coast Guard.

Several naval units were employed under the coordination of the Coast Guard, including the Supply Vessel Shark, a support unit for the Rospomare B platform, equipped with fire-extinguishing capabilities and carrying on board the 26 people evacuated from the platform affected by the fire and from the neighbouring ones, also evacuated as a precaution.

Fire extinguishing

The primary objective of the operations is to extinguish the fire to ensure the safety of the area and surrounding platforms as well as to carry out continuous monitoring activities to verify any environmental consequences related to the event. Precisely for this purpose, satellite images have been requested from the European Maritime Safety Agency Emsa, useful to assist the environmental monitoring activity

The Rospo Mare oil field

The Rospo Mare oil field is situated roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) off the coast of Italy’s Abruzzo region in waters approximately 80 meters deep. Energean, a company with origins in Greece, manages the facility, which has been operational since 1982. The site comprises three platforms and a floating storage and offloading vessel used for temporary storage of extracted oil.

The Italian Coast Guard, through its Marine Environmental Department, is operating in close coordination with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and is in constant contact with the Department of Civil Protection.
