The Indian National Shipowners’ Association INSA became a full member of the International Chamber of Shipping ICS The move brings Indian operators directly into global discussions on regulation, maritime digitalisation and maritime decarbonisation at a time of heightened geopolitical and commercial uncertainty.
INSA's entry into the ICS comes at a time when regulatory, operational, and sustainability issues are reshaping international shipping. The INSA represents Indian shipping companies and is involved in fleet development, maritime education, and engagement with regulatory authorities at the national and international levels. This development reveals a major strategic importance for Indian ship owners, managers, and operators. It offers them a more direct channel into the rule-making processes that increasingly shape commercial risk and digital transformation strategies worldwide.
On the other hand ICS stated that INSA’s membership would increase regional representation on its committees and panels, as well as provide Indian industry perspectives on discussions regarding seafarer welfare, digitalization, decarbonization, and ship recycling.

Thomas A. Kazakos, the secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping ICS, noted, “We are delighted to welcome the Indian National Shipowners’ Association into the International Chamber of Shipping. India plays an increasingly important role in global shipping through its shipping companies, growing maritime industry, strong maritime education sector, and wider contribution to the global economy. The country’s strategic importance to international trade and shipping makes the association's participation especially valuable as we work together to address the challenges and opportunities facing our industry worldwide.” I look forward to INSA’s valuable insights at ICS committees and panels.”

Anil Devli, the CEO of the Indian National Shipowners' Association (INSA), said: "Joining the International Chamber of Shipping is an important step for the INSA and the Indian shipping community. As global shipping evolves and global politics continue to change, it is crucial that Indian shipping companies have a voice in international discussions and policymaking. We look forward to collaborating with ICS members to promote a safe, sustainable, and efficient global shipping industry, and to ensure that the perspectives of Indian shipping are effectively represented at the international level, especially within the International Maritime Organization (IMO).”
Founded in 1929, the Indian National Shipowners' Association (INSA) represents Indian shipping companies and is closely involved in fleet development, maritime education, and engagement with regulators. Its admission to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) strengthens India’s direct participation in international shipping policy, particularly within the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The ICS represents national shipowners’ associations and companies from over 40 countries and territories, covering the majority of the global merchant fleet. Its committees and panels play a central role in shaping industry positions on maritime regulatory compliance, seafarer welfare, maritime digitalization, and environmental policy, including decarbonization and ship recycling, for shipowners and managers.
