The Cargo  vessel "FENER" is located outside the legal jurisdiction of the canal, and no action can be taken without a formal request from the ship's owner or the relevant authorities

The Suez Canal Authority is ready to provide technical support and rescue services if requested by the ship owner or relevant authorities.

The authority submitted a detailed report on the ship's technical condition and demanded that the ship's owner salvage it, informing him of his responsibility for any economic and environmental consequences that might arise from the worsening of the current situation.

In light of the questions raised about the cargo ship "FENER" which ran aground outside the Suez  the canal's shipping lane along the coast of Port Said city in the middle of this month . The Suez Canal Authority SCA  confirms that it has not yet received any official requests, either from the ship owner or from the legally concerned parties, to provide technical support and rescue services to the ship located outside the canal's navigational channel north of Port Said, at a distance of 5 miles west of the northern entrance to the Suez Canal in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Authority’s commitment to preserving  life of Crew

The SCA clarifies that although the ship was outside the legal jurisdiction of the canal and did not affect the regularity of navigation through the canal, the Authority did not hesitate to fulfill its role by taking several measures, most notably the immediate response to the distress call of the ship's captain, "FENER," and the rescue of all members of the ship's crew.In the early hours of Wednesday, January 14, despite the unstable weather conditions, based on the Authority’s commitment to preserving life of  Crew

Diligently monitored the ship's technical condition

The Suez Canal Authority's efforts did not stop there; the Authority also diligently monitored the ship's technical condition through its marine rescue team and ensured there were no environmental risks due to any potential fuel leaks. In addition to addressing the ship owner through the approved shipping agent and demanding that he salvage the ship and informing him that he bears responsibility for the economic and environmental effects that may result from the current situation, the Authority also submitted yesterday, Wednesday, a detailed report on the technical condition of the ship based on the request of the ship's shipping agent.

The environmental situation in the area

The authority is monitoring the stability of the environmental situation in the area where the ship is located and the absence of any environmental risks or fuel leaks, especially since the cargo ship FENER carries a shipment of salt and does not operate on heavy fuel oil but rather on light diesel, which reduces environmental concerns as it is easier to deal with and combat, especially with the small size of the fuel tanks due to the small size of the ship

Protect the marine environment in the coastal area

In accordance with its commitment to its social responsibilities, the Suez Canal Authority continues to coordinate with relevant authorities such as the Port Said Governorate, the Maritime Safety Authority, the Ministry of Environment, and the Navy to take all necessary measures and procedures to protect the marine environment in the coastal area of the Port Said Governorate in the event of any potential fuel leaks.

Provide the necessary technical advice, technical and logistical support

The Suez Canal Authority emphasizes its full readiness to provide the necessary technical advice, technical and logistical support to deal with the ship if requested by the ship owner, or in coordination with all relevant authorities, after taking the necessary legal measures in case of extreme necessity to place a precautionary hold on the ship as a legal procedure.
